The Machinability of Pure Copper
Pure copper has the property of low hardness, high heat conductivity, plasticity, toughness and coefficient of linear expansion. However the machinability of pure copper is bad (about 65% of 45 steel) due to following reasons:
1) High plasticity, toughness, not easy for chip breaking during processing. The chip is easy to adhere to the cutting edge, result in generating built-up edge, aggravating the tool wear, and affecting the surface quality of finishing.
2) High linear expansion coefficient. It is easy to deform due to cutting heat, and make it difficult to measure.
3) Pure copper with low strength and hardness. It is easy to deform when clamping or cutting force is too large.
Pure copper parts aim to achieve high dimensional accuracy and surface roughness need to be processed by finish cutting instead of grinding. Copper machining service requires sharp cutting tools, good chip removing, so it should take a larger rake angle, with a grinding of shallow and wide large arc groove. During rough machining, the rake face is grinded to straight to reduce cutting deformation. The back corner and the auxiliary angle should also be large, in order to increase back engagement. If pure copper contains sulfur, selenium, tellurium or other cutting elements, then the machinability can be improved.
